Final Project: Performing Arts

Yoga: The Sun Salutation

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=imECH3wiJ1I

In this video Im performing the sun salutation, I recently started to attend yoga classes is very new in so I decided to practice and share this video. It is a simple routine and I added some stretching techniques (like raising my legs in the downward dog) to help warm up the body and stretch other muscles. I use three different angles according to the movement I was doing.

Art Exhibit

University of Tampa Student Exhibit

Name: Human Love
By: Emma Benitez

This piece of art was very interesting to watch, it gave me the feeling that we, as humans, are all the same. She uses mix media to create texture to the painting. The humans in the art work have different texture and it makes it relevant in the piece. Then she dripped some painting which completes the artwork perfectly. It was simple and at the same time it says a lot. This was my favorite piece of the art exhibition.

Name: My Universe
By: Emma Benitez

This is another piece by Benitez that I found to be very successful. She uses mix media as well, and even though she uses a lot of color she managed for the viewer not to be overwhelmed while looking at the painting. I also felt related with the painting since I have several cats and I not only know they are hard to draw but also it can look like a cliche. Benitez knew how to avoid those obstacles in a modern way.

Name: Model Feelings
By: Samantha Gutelano

I liked this piece, I know that 3D objects are very hard to create but I think Samantha did a great job. The look of the painting is very appealing, she gave it an old look using bronze color for the background and then a light turquoise color like the color of old metal get.

Name: Self Portrait
By: Michelle O'Brien

This painting was made by putting together pieces and she created a self portrait. It was very interesting to watch and it demonstrate her hard work. She could have worked in a title that suits the painting, so that it connects to the final product.

Name: Two and a Half Minute kiss
By: Jamie Stubklzer

This artwork was made up using mix media, and I think it was very nice how Jamie managed to use only black, white and grey scales in his entire painting. He also added texture to the painting which makes it more interesting as a viewer. Lastly I loved the title since it adds to the content to the painting and it is also it gave a feeling of sweetness even though it was very dark.

Name: The Creation of the Apple
By: Nick Oliveri

I stared at this painting for the longest time, it was very interesting and the topic he chose was very nice. It was brilliant how he grabbed a historic painting and related it to todays society and our technological creations. Nick combined a lot of mediums and colors and created a very large painting with relevant content. He installed a light bulb as part of his art, making this piece the first one you see. Also his name of the painting contributes to the idea, making it even more interesting.

Name: Giving you Bedroom Eyes
By: Colleen Hani

This last piece was made with pastels, creating interesting stokes on the painting. The painting didnt really call my attention that much and it was a little dull. I liked that she connected the theme with the painting putting bedroom objects in her face. It just seems very simple and kind of incomplete.

The Creator Project Video

-The brighter the light the darker the shadows
-He installs sensible list around the city of Philadelphia where people can send a message to the central and then your voice can control the movement and intensity of the light
-They chose Philadelphia for the variety and the structure of the city
-Vectorial has a sense of distance that creates confusion
-There is a relationship between the lights and your voice
-YOu only have to download the app and send your voice message and then it would be transferred into movement into the lights
-His work has created a platform for new types of communication
-I would like for the work to be a little more deep, where people can hear your message somehow I don't really see the point of lights moving
-Also put different colors of lights

How art, technology and design inform creative leaders

John Maeda TED Talk

- He has been dealing with computers for a long time
-Went to MIT, and he did a human computer placing people for every task the computer does to narrow it down
-How to combine technology, art and math?
-Images, sounds and text have been appearing with the years
-He uses an example of taking the word FEAR and changes the font of the word and describe how the meaning changes since one relates the word with the art of the typography. This is a way context combines with form to create the meaning of the actual word.
-He questioned why computers did not respond to sound, he played for many years with types of fonts and making experiments of how a computer can respond to his voice by moving a black square every time he speaks.
-Art is about asking questions
-New media is not about something being new, is about what is good and working for todays society
-Leadership is needed since it is now a network where everyone communicates with everyone. Leaders see un probable connections and make them possible.
-Now businesses have a CEO in the center and as a leader he has to find connections between different departments

Soft Concrete

Cement is getting old, so I decided to do a concrete that is soft so people can take longer to get somewhere. Also they will make more exercise since they have to put more effort in walking in a soft jello like concrete!

Grid Project

I started to brainstorm of the technology present while I was growing up. I lived in a farm far from downtown in Costa Rica and so I had a big garden and I was often outdoors. I never had nintendo nor playstation nor xbox. Video games were not present in my childhood at all. I did not have a computer until I was in my senior year and a phone until I was in 10th grade. So technology was not a often thing in my life just for some TV and what we did in school.

The most fascinating interaction I had with technology when I was young was when I went to my cousins house and we played Super Mario in their Nintendo 64. I remember I never wanted to leave the house, we always had so much fun together playing this game.

For my grid project I decided to make the player Mario to remember those times.

First I draw 12 vertical lines and 16 horizontal lines in a 25" by 35" cardboard. Then I had to cut 5 colors of post it's and and started with the background. I did not find brown nor black color of post it's so I colors them with markers.

Flip Book

About 2 weeks ago I got back home from a avery long day and I saw my house was upside down. I decided to make a short story about my cat named Fango in my flip book since he is always making messes and also he leaves presents in my shoes such as lizards or bugs. I always pet him and pretend he is a champ since it is a gift for me, but inside I am always very disguised by it.

ART240: Art and Technology
Video Game Carmen
The opera Carmen was first performed in Opera Comique located in Paris, France on the date March 3rd, 1875. Carmen is a story about a peasant girl who works at a cigar factory in Sevilla, Spain. The conflict within the story consists of Carmen, being a very feminine girl who likes the attention of men, starts working in this big factory. She receives attention from everyone except her boss called Jose Zuniga. She gets into a big fight with another girl in the factory when the police arrives and she manages to escape, but unfortunately Don Jose gets arrested. He gets release and there is when their romantic affair starts and they fall in love. Carmen lover, Escamillo, fights with Jose Zuniga for Carmen’s love, unable to finish the fight Escamillo sets a date for a combat and Jose Zuniga’s lover begs him to return home since his mother is ill, he wars Carmen they will meet again and gives her a ring along with his promise. It is until Carmen tells him that their affair is over, that she was born free and free she will die. Jose filled with anger, stabs Carmen to death.
I learned many things while watching this opera, and the first thing is how drastic and dramatic the plot is. Death is a constant in almost every opera produced, while tragedy and sadness dominates the entire story. During that century desire to challenge idealism and replace it with realism was primal.Change was being asked by the viewers started thinking that the grand opera became a little predictable and not very original. The opera comique started looking for new and fresh talent, it became the venue for the introduction of new and more innovative works. This opera was presented particularly after the Franco-Prussian war in the years 1870-1871. People after that were in need of new entertainment since they were shocked and affected by the French body politic and created ripple effects that reached into the world of opera.
I decided to develop a video game that takes place inside the cigar factory, the factory is going to be portrayed as old and made of red bricks. The characters that one can play with are Carmen and Jose Zuniga. The video game will consist of having to pass a series of problems presented while working in the cigar factory. It will start as the character getting the job as the first issue, while working the character will be making money as a reward in the game. That money is later used to pay taxes and food to be able to live in the virtual world. Later on, another issue is presented as another challenge which is Carmen fighting with another co-worker, if you are playing with Carmen then you have to win the fight and if you are playing with Jose then you have to break the fight. The next challenge is for Carmen and Jose to have an affair without any other players noticing or suspecting anything since they are secret lovers. Another challenge is running from the police after the fight to avoid prison, as well as then fighting Carmen’s lover wether with words being Carmen of physically when playing with Jose. The final challenge or mission in the game is going to be for Jose to kill Carmen with a knife and stab her to death and fight back Carmen, and if the player is Carmen she has to run from him and fight for her life.
After each challenge, you win flowers, for later on trade them for a favor to save your life or when you are in trouble. Carmen will win a flower every time she seduces a man and wins his heart and after every challenge while Jose will win a flower every time he gets Carmen’s attention and after every challenge as well. The flowers are red roses, and they work in saving the player from trouble when the challenge has not been complete successful. Like for example, if Carmen cannot run from the police after getting into a fight with her co-worker, then she gets to go to prison. Carmen can use one of her red roses to give to the police officer outside her cell to let her go. If they fail a challenge the player is going to not only lose money and not receive a flower but they must do a secret favor to one of their friends without anyone noticing to replace the failed challenge. Like for example Micaela is the first friend of Carmen in the video game, if you fail a challenge Micaela can ask of you to go and kill her boyfriend that cheated on her or can ask you to steal money from the workers in the cigar factory for her. The player must complete the favor in a secretly manner and cannot get caught. If they get caught and into trouble they go down a level and have to re-start the past challenge to continue to the next level with a new challenge.
The setting of the video game is in Sevilla, Spain in a small town where the player can go to the cigar factory (main building) the plaza to buy food and goods and their house. They can also open new places to go as they make friends and invite you to their house or a restaurant. The player has to work in the factory to gain money and be able to eat, but can also make friends inside the video game.

The Birth and Life of Opera Film

-Opera is music that produces more emotions such as rage and love
-History of opera is stained with blood of the revolutions
-Henry V got married and two of the guests in the wedding had the innovative idea of singing opera, both had a dream that night of having the opportunity of repeating that occasion
-Medicci and Consagas were two high class families that helped immensely with the development of the arts
-Lord Farer was the first big and brilliant opera which it is about a man trying to have her lovely deceased wife back, it was designed by Monteverdi
-Small boys used to have the most incredibly high pitched voice, little kids were searched upon to look for the best singers and were usually castrated to they can keep their infant, high pitched voice.
-Monteverdi had a hidden special room to perform only for the Duke.
-Emperor Joseph wan another man in power that was very interested in the storytelling of the operas

Art Exhibition

The exhibition in University of Tampa was very complete. I was very impressed with a lot of works that were being presented. It was very innovative and modern art going on in the exhibition.

Joseph Farbrook was an artist which grabbed a nook and made a moving image, constantly dancing. He installed a frame around the nook as if it was a regular painting. The image is very opaque so you cannot see the gloss that you would normally see in a reflection on a glass of any electronic. I thought the idea was very innovative and creative plus the actual picture of the ballerina was amazing. It looked like a simple trace of a ballerina and remind me of Edgar Degas.

Allen Hampton and Joanne Steinhart were two other artists that called my attention. Hampton had an image of a girl from Vietnam running and screaming in a technique that looks as if the picture were made out of pixels. The artwork had a lot of emotion an the image of the girl was simply amazing. Joanne has a very interesting technique where she does a kind of mosaics with the same picture. It was very appealing to the eye and it was a very nice idea.

My favorite was one by Ricardio Arias which was a big, tall and skinny table which had a sculpture of a Tibetan figure. The entire table vibrated and made a humming sound which represented the humming made during the meditation of the Tibet people.

There were some artworks that I disliked a little, or maybe I thought they were a little odd. The fist one was Sol Erez that did a video of porn stars recreating some political events. The idea was very different and I though that could be very interesting, but the format of the video was very homemade and it got out of focus many time, make up and scenarios were very bad as well. The second one was a artwork by Dana Corrigan, it was a video about a fox and a rabbit. The illustrations were flawless and very nice but the video didn't call my attention as much, it was very white and I appreciate simplicity but maybe it was too much.

Microbiologist Raul Cuero

Microbiologist Raul Cuero PhD on Sparking Creativity on Living Smart with Patricia Gras

Raul Cuero was born and raised in a very poor neighborhood in Colombia. It was very rough growing up since he belonged to a very low social class. The had to sleep on the floor and thats when he started observing the cockroaches in the floor. He started understanding how they traveled in pairs and had many questions inside his brain. His parents did nor know how to write or read and Raul promised to himself that it would not happen to him.
Cuero got involved in sports, started playing soccer until he got injures and developed an interest for basketball. He had always known he had a creative mind by doing exactly the opposite of what was expected of him. He grew in the basketball world in Colombia until he realized he was not taken intellectually serious, nobody believed he was able to have an intellectual career nor life.
He got a scholarship with his basketball and could study in the United States. In the video he states to Patricia that he never felt normal, he could never understand his basketball friends and it was hard for him to develop a sense of what was normal. He started to realize even more, how different the saw the world when he decided to drop  his basketball profession and become a microbiologist.
Cuero has been part of several discoveries like how to clean up oil easier after a spill or how to clean or destroy the nuclear and toxic material. Raul is a man that came from a background that was hard in every aspect and that nothing was expected of him. He took those criticisms and low expectations and believed in himself. He had the creative mind to understand he saw things differently and that he could help the world in any aspect.

Art vs Design

Art vs Design
Article by Craig A Elimeliah

As Elimeliah stated in his article design is a very calculated process. Normally designs are carefully thought out, discussed by a group and sharpened heavily in the computer to achieve a very perfect design. Craig even compares a designer with an engineer since they both have a very delicate and well thought career. There are rules to follow and certain aspects such as color, size, position and layout are some of the aspects that have to be carefully picked to deliver the right message.

Art in the other hand, Craig Elimeliah explains, that it is not as strict or hard to do. Art is suppose to deliver emotions or a feeling which is easily made by color or shapes. Artists have the liberty to explore and use any medium they want to convey whatever emotion being pain or love or sadness.

Delgado

Delgado
Juan Carlos Delgado is an incredible artists. He has done some outstanding sculptures. He has a very unique method where he freezes or uses ice as part as the artwork. In my opinion Delgado does use multimedia since he is using the clay to create the figure of the sculpture bit then it is using a freezing method to create a ice layer as part of the sculpture.
These previous picture shows the process in which Juan Carlos Delgado uses to freeze the sculptures.

Art and Technology Definitions

Art ans technology are two things that go hand by hand. The word art is defined by the Merriam Webster Dictionary as " something that is created with imagination and skill and that is beautiful or that expresses important ideas or feelings" or "works created by artists such as: paintings, sculptures, etc., that are created to be beautiful or to express important ideas or feelings". The rood of the word Technology is techno which the art craft invented by men. Technology means "the application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes, especially in industry" or also "machinery and equipment developed from the application of scientific knowledge."
Art and being creative is necessary for the technological advances to be successful.
